Draw Your Buddy
A fun drawing game that rewards students’ ability to answer questions correctly by letting them draw the missing body parts on their team’s Buddy.
Skill Level:
Beginning, Intermediate.
Materials:
Die, blackboard.
Instructions:
Similar in pace and game design to Master Builder. Students roll a die to see what body part they get to add to an incomplete person drawn on the board.
Divide the class into teams and for each team draw a blank face and limbless torso on the board. (To give the students more chances to draw I usually draw more than one Buddy for each team.)
Tell the students that today they will have the opportunity to make a Buddy to keep them company for the rest of class.

Along with the blank Buddy it’s important to write out a key so the Ss know what number corresponds to what body part (and so they’re presented with another opportunity to practice reading).
After answering a question corrects, Ss roll the die to see what body part they get to draw. Encourage the students to be creative–funny hair, crazy arms, and peglegs all make the game more entertaining for the class.
To make the game last longer I usually use the rule that body parts in pairs (arms, legs, eyes) are drawn one at a time. This also increases the chances for comedy as the paired body parts usually don’t match.
The Buddies remain on the board for the rest of class – later in the lesson students that have done something good/special
are allowed to further decorate the Buddy (customizing the clothes, giving her a pet, etc).
The game can also be played as a competition (first team to finish their Buddy wins; no re-rolls if you roll a number for a body part that’s already been drawn).
